Skinny Steaks and Mushroom Gravy
Let me say, I've known my husband (my dear sweet husband) for 3 years and I've gained 10 pounds each year. When they say, you can win a man's heart through his stomach - its true. Doesn't matter what I put on the table, he'll say, This is good. One night I made deer steak with mushroom gravy, mash potatoes and english peas. I had the spice of thyme out on the counter. He sprinkled it all over his food, thinking it was pepper. He kept eating and said, Baby this sure is good. I let him finish the plate and then asked - did it taste any different? He was like yeah - I said you put thyme all over it. He said, thats what made it taste different. He's just so sweet, it doesn't matter what I put out there, he'll eat it. We had a good laugh. I guess with that little story I will give you the recipe. It's really called Skinny Steaks - I use Deer steak but you can use cube steak.
cube steaks
Pam spray
1 pkg mushrooms - sliced
1/2 cup flour
Pioneer Fat Free Gravy mix (the dry package)
1 cup water
1 cup milk
Spray your skillet with Pam and turn on medium heat. Saute mushrooms and then put in a bowl to the side, or put them to the side of your pan.
Re-spray your skillet. Coat each side of your cube or deer steak with flour and put into skillet (usually takes about 5 minutes to each side) then remove from skillet.
Pour in gravy mix, water, milk and whisk until thicken. Add your steak and mushrooms and turn on simmer w/the lid on, for 10 minutes then serve.
Serve with mashed potatoes and english peas. I have to say - I've started buying either fresh or frozen and have been trying to stay away from can goods. Or if your dieting serve it with a fresh salad and a vegetable. I love green onions, so I garnish it with them. This is one of my favorite meals. Hope you enjoy.
